Hi there! My name is Chloe Henderson, and I am an Edinburgh-based interdisciplinary artist.
My practice began in metal-etched jewellery, and that process still informs the way I draw today, particularly in the crisp, highly detailed black-and-white linework that has become my signature style. I graduated with a Masters in Jewellery and Related Products from the Birmingham School of Jewellery in 2018, achieving a Distinction. Before that, I trained at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design in Dundee, where I completed my Bachelor of Design (Hons) in 2014.
I create inked illustrations, multimedia artworks, zines, and writing shaped by my lived experiences, particularly my relationship with mental health and my queer identity, which inform both the themes and emotional core of my work. I draw inspiration from the natural world, mythological creatures, faery tales, and nerd culture, alongside the radical idea that humans should be kind to every living thing. I’m especially drawn to the strange and the fantastical, often creating highly patterned portraits and narrative worlds inhabited by creatures that exist somewhere between the real and the imagined.
Through illustration, I adventured my way into the world of zine-making, and in 2020, I co-founded Coin-Operated Press CIC - a social enterprise zine press. Rooted in Scotland’s creative community, we bring people together through workshops, zine fairs, and our travelling zine library. Each month, we collaborate with artists and writers to create new zines that amplify unsung voices. Our themes range from important causes close to our hearts to playful, joyful ideas that offer a little light in the darkness. We’re passionate about sharing our love for zines and creating educational resources that open up zine-making as a tool for expression, connection, and change.
Alongside my studio practice, I regularly exhibit and sell my work at markets, fairs, and comic conventions, where I also deliver workshops and share my creative process with others. My work has been exhibited internationally, including screenings of my film The Chimera Artist as part of the Oscillations Exhibition at Munich Jewellery Week.
In my spare time, I tame unicorns and swim with mermaids.
